Hi All- I would like to tell you all about a fundraising project that has just been launched by Maddie's Corner. It is called : "The Power of One" and it is to benefit a group called Sit Stay Read. (www.sitstayread.org) As you know , Maddie's Corner is devoted to animals and people helping each other and to highlighting the many ways animals enrich our lives. Sit Stay Read is a wonderful group, based in Chicago that is tackling the problem of children's lieracy in a unique way - they have created a program that uses dogs to help children learn to read! There certainly is no creature more accepting and less judgemental than a dog. A child struggling to read doesn't fear being teased or reprimanded by a dog. On the contrary, dogs put children at ease. They shower them with love and affection creating a perfect environment for learning. Working with the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) Center For Literacy, Sit Stay Read has created a structured and thoughtful program that currently reaches over 400 struggling 2nd to 4th graders in Chicago public schools with documented results. It is the dream of Sit Stay Read to help more children in the Chicago area improve their reading skills and to one day help create similar programs throughout the country, using the bond between people and their pets to help improve the quality of children's lives and, indeed, to help give them a brighter future. We realize these are difficult economic times. Many people are struggling to make ends meet.The idea behind the Power of One is very simple. $1 doesn't seem like very much. But $1 from many sources all of a sudden can add up to quite a sizeable amount. For this project, we are asking for anyone who would like to help support Sit Stay Read to donate just $1. If you would like to donate more- that would be wonderful- but $1 is all we are seeking. Sit Stay Read has benefited hundreds of at risk children in Chicago. We would love to help them reach hundreds, even thousands more and perhaps even enable this organization to establish programs throughout the country.
